How to Take Professional Business Headshots – Blog by Los Angeles Corporate Photographer, Vanie Poyey
If you find yourself needing to take professional headshots for your business, you’re probably wondering where to start. Don’t worry – I’m here to help with three tips for getting the most out of your session!
- Have a solid idea of what you want your headshot to look like before the shoot. Before anything, think about the context in which you intend to use the shots, whether it’s for LinkedIn, a website, internal company photos etc. You’ll also want to consider any pertinent criteria for the shots– does your company have specs your photographer needs to adhere to? What kind of backgrounds do you need or prefer? Find samples of what you like online– this info will be useful for you as you search for a photographer to make sure the photographer you find can emmulate the style you like. It’ll also come in handy for the photographer!
- Come prepared with different wardrobe options and accessories. For example, if you’re a medical professional, you may want one shot in more casual clothing, and another with your coat and stethoscope. Whether you are showcasing a formal business suit or something a little more on the casual side, the right clothing and accessories can help to convey the right message about your business and level of expertise.
- Do your research & work with the right photographer! Remember that being professional ABSOLUTELY doesn’t mean that you have to be stiff or uptight– do your due diligence and make sure you work with a photographer who directs you, makes you comfortable in front of the camera and brings out your personality. Don’t worry about the “perfect” pose or the perfect smile – instead make sure your portraits are warm and approachable. No one wants to do business with people who don’t look welcoming in their headshots.
Whether you’re a solopreneur or the head of a large corporation, having a well-done professional headshot is essential for your branding– and if you’re like most people, you may not have a lot of experience in front of the camera. By following these simple guidelines, you can relax and be yourself in front of the lens, and walk away with images that will help promote your business for years to come!
